Conner Hepting
My name is Conner Hepting and I am a sophomore finance and accounting major at the University of Maryland and in the Media, Self, and Society Scholars program. My university email is [email protected]. I grew up in Towson, Maryland and I have always been a huge Maryland fan. This love for UMD has only grew since I have been attending the University. The Scholars program has made my experience much better and helped me find who I truly am!
Originally when I was accepted into the University of Maryland, I was hoping to be in the BSE scholars program because I am a Finance major, however I was placed in Media, Self, and Society. I was skeptical at first, but as I look back on my time in the program, I could not be happier. Not only has the program improved my knowledge of the world and media, it has also made me a much better person. Growing up I never really paid attention to any other media than sports, and until recently I didn't realize how impactful all media was on society. Alison, Kelly, and the rest of Media, Self, and Society program has opened my eyes to this and now I analyze media in a completely different way. I read and watch multiple sources, I break them down and find the bias or fake news, and I discuss topics with those proficient in the categories. In regard to my career goals, this program has pushed me to start analyzing business news and how everyday news will affect the business world. All of these new developments in the way I view media can be directly attributed to the Media, Self, and Society program. On another note, the large amount of prominent guest speakers we have had speak to us has opened so many doors and allowed many new connections to be built. When I entered the program I hoped to find a set of teachers and students that I would enjoy my time with. However, looking back, I found teachers that I will look for advice from for the rest of my college experience, and a group of classmates that made my first two years more enjoyable than I could have imagined. I cannot overstate how grateful I am to have been a part of the Media, Self, and Society program, and I know that my time in the program has made me a better human being and vastly improved my knowledge in the field of media. I am extremely excited to see where this amazing program takes me in the rest of college and my future in general!
